Boeing 747s aren’t known for their green credentials but an unusual recycling exercise indicates otherwise.

For one such aircraft is parked silently and motionless at Stockholm Arlanda Airport where it has been transformed into “the world’s first Jumbo Hostel.”

The plane-turned-hotel comprises 25 rooms (approx six sqm in size), each with three beds, flatscreen TVs and wifi internet access. This “economy” option comes with communal bathrooms and showers but guests can opt for a plusher stay in the cockpit suite which features ensuite shower and views of the airport.

The retired Boeing 747-200 underwent a complete overhaul and major renovation work last year in preparation for its January 2009 opening. Constructed in 1976 the plane went into service with Pan Am and its heritage has been preserved by Swedish entrepreneur Oscar Diös, the venture’s founder and CEO. A retro theme pervades staff uniforms and general design with creams, blues and oranges reflecting the look adopted by airlines some 40 years ago.

Diös reports media coverage from Japan to the USA in what’s become something of a quirky tourist landmark as well as a handy accommodation option. “This should bring an increased interest in Stockholm and the region,” said Oscar Diös, CEO and founder of the Jumbo Hostel. “The interest is huge with tour operators and tourist organisations worldwide.”

A complimentary bus service runs guests from the hostel’s location at the airport perimeter to the terminals every few minutes. Rates range from 350 SEK (£29) to £3,300 SEK (£275) to the cockpit suite with bathroom and breakfast included.

The success of the venture will take time to assess but there’s no doubting the novelty of the service concept. As its site manager Gisela Olsson comments:

“It's just fantastic to finally be able to show something so unique and special to the rest of the world.”
