Mar Menor resort         (Reviews- Venues)

Five minutes from Europe’s largest salt water lagoon is a nine-hole golf course, luxury spa, two pools, a Kids' Club and seven restaurants and bars. This is the  InterContinental Mar Menor Golf Resort & Spa, part of the Nicklaus Golf Trail and located within easy reach of cultural treasures in the towns of Cartagena and Murcia.

Ethos

Boutique, languid, sophistication. Sporting warm, earthy tones, rich terracotta floors, seasonal wood and Moroccan lanterns.

Rooms

The hotel offers 57 deluxe rooms, five 5 executive suites, 1 superior deluxe suite and its royal suite was recently taken over by singer Jennifer Lopez. The rooms command views of the golf course or pool area. Bedrooms are spacious with large wooden headboards.

Design is traditional Spanish style with artwork to match. Bathrooms are spacious and feature large hydro baths with wooden screens that open out into the bedroom, as well as a walk-in shower. All rooms include:

· Large marble bathrooms
· Hydro-massage bath and separate walk-in shower
· Balcony or terrace
· ADSL, WIFI, TV internet browser

Leisure

Guests can enjoy a round of golf on Mar Menor Best Golf, a 9-hole Nicklaus designed golf course, which is currently being expanded to 18-holes under the supervision of Nicklaus Design with completion due at the end of 2009.

The course that surrounds the hotel is part of the Nicklaus Golf Trail and whilst staying at the hotel guests can also enjoy the other Nicklaus Golf Trail courses, easily accessible via a complimentary bus service from the hotel.

Spa

As an antidote to the Spanish heat it's hard to top the hotel's luxury Espa spa.

Two separate jacuzzi retreats (right) await male and female guests.

The subterranean feel and dark, scented Moorish/Arabic ambience induces carefree isolation and it's very easy to languish in the whirlpools with no real sense of time.

This detachment is compounded by no-rush, variable intensity massages and treatments in the almost medicinal spa rooms.

For a more active pace a gym and two swimming pools help snap guests out of their reverie and resume the real world.

Dining

This is where Murcia's strapline as the Garden of Europe comes into its own. The tang of  Murcian and Mediterranean influence was evident across the array of dishes that we grazed on. Freshly sourced ingredients make the dishes destined for culinary excellence and dining in the balmy Spanish air is a not-to-be-rushed experience.

Nomad restaurant offers world cuisine with a strong Mediterranean influence while Hiroko uses the finest of ingredients to create authentic Asian Cuisine with a fusion twist. Lighter Mediterranean-style meals and grills are served at Al Fresco and the Lobby Bar also offers a wide selection of light snacks at lunchtime and in the evening.

Getting there

Less than two and a half hours flying time from the UK and less than one hour from both Murcia-San Javier and Alicante international airports.
